Plus Size Disney Looks: Little Mermaid’s Ariel

Up where they walk, up where they run, up where they stay all day in the sun.
Wandering free, wish I could be, part of that world

I think Ariel was talking about Hawaii in that song. Well that what I think when I’ve been singing it while prepping for this look. When I was a kid I got really into Beanie Babies. Like REALLY into them. I bought and sold those suckers like they were high ticket stocks. Buy! Buy! Sell! Sell! I actually made so much money that I was able to cash out early and pay for exchange trips to Brasil and Finland. I come from a long line of weirdly obsessed collectors. It’s a thing. My mom was way into collecting pretty much anything that was collectible. Our house was like a museum and spent most of my childhood fear I might break pretty much anything I touched. I suppose that one of the reasons I relate to Ariel so much. We’re both collectors. But the connection runs deeper, we’re both women forging our own paths against what our respective cultures tells us is status quo. Ariel is the Disney bad ass and I am here IRL blonde counterpart.

I took a little liberty with Ariel’s look because I feel like it’s what she would have wanted, if you know she was actually real. I am wearing a metallic “Shell Yeah” imprinted tank purchased from asos, paired with a sea foam green stretchy pencil skirt from Amazon. Underneath I am beach ready with an amazing jelly fish print bikini from Swimsuits for All. For accessories I rocked a metallic clam necklace I picked up here in Hawaii, a pair of super comfy sneaker style flats from Target’s collaboration with Sam & Libby, retro inspired white shades from Charlotte Russe, a five below beach tote and  a sea urchin looking hair accessory I purchased somewhere in the dark depths of the internet.

Plus Size Fashion Blog Little Mermaid Fatkini Beach Disney Outfit 3For make up I kept it super simple. I dotted the face with some sunscreen because  I am preventing a future of leather face.  I let my sunglasses carry my attitude and added a pop of pink on the lip to as a nod to Ariel’s rosy lips. For my hair I rocked her signature side hair part with straight hair. I used my “sea urchin” barrette to sweep my bangs out of my face and up my sex appeal. Turns out wearing a flower on the right side in Hawaii is a public announcement you are single and ready to mingle. So I wore it there, because I am.

Plus Size Fashion Blog Little Mermaid Fatkini Beach Disney Outfit 4Overall the look was sassy and fun and oh so mermaid with an issue following society’s orders. Also this photo is the closest I will ever come to a wet t-shirt contest. Enjoy it. I look good.

Plus Size Disney Looks: Snow White

Plus Size Disney Looks: Snow White

Someday my prince will come. Someday I will find the one. Though he’s far away, he’ll find my love someday. Someday when my dreams come true….oh please make my dreams come true  plus size fashion blog plus size disney inspired looks snow white 2

Oh Snow White, we have SOOOOOO much in common. After what seems 3 months of tremendously awful dates, I needed a little something to give a little umph to my perspective. So today I am channeling my inner Snow White in hopes that maybe I’ll gnosh on a bad apple, make friends with a collection of little people with hygiene issues, and finally meet my one true love. Oh man, I hope this doesn’t mean he has to be into brutally murdering forest animals. But that’s a whole other story.

plus size fashion blog plus size disney inspired looks snow white 3For this plus size Snow White look, I paired a bright yellow pleated full skirt with a sassy royal blue flare crop top with a sweetheart neckline. Both items are from the eloquii. I styled the look with yellow transparent sandals, a red vintage bow tie and an potentially poison apple (it has been on my counter fall too long to still be edible). The look screams Snow White while also having a more modern yet 50s retro vibe that I adore.

Now hair and make up is really where I think I nailed it. Well at least that what I keep telling myself, because it took forever. It’s not easy task to make a long haired girl, look like she’s actually got a rockin’ curly bob. To achieve this I set my hair in teeny tiny foam rollers, heated them and let them set for several hours. Afterwards I finger combed my hair and pinned the blue tips underneath the rest of my hair- the texture of the curl helping to hold the bobby pins. For my make up I paired a red MAC lipstick, with my base foundation, rose cheek and a traditional pin-up eye. I also darkened my eyebrows to add to the vintage feel.

Bucket Item: Learning How to Pole Dance

Bucket Item: Learning How to Pole Dance

Plus size fitness blog plus size pole dancing 2So when I made my life list eons ago I snuck on there something I thought would finally give me the va va voom I was missing. Pole dancing. See what I didn’t know then, but definitely know now, is that sexiness isn’t a dance move. It’s confidence in who you are and trust in your body to express how you are feeling. So if you’re feeling like a sex cat in heat, you’re body is going to radiate sexy like it’s holding a neon sign that says “this girl needs to man to worship her.”

Plus size fitness blog plus size pole dancingI put these images in black because they feel like they should be. I mean when I think of sexy french burlesque I think of black and white and corsets. Sister child has a straight policy against underwear posts- that’s a really long and possibly really heated debate I shall spare you from today- so no corsets for you. However black and white filter? I got this.

Pole Dancing was surprisingly plus size friendly. I didn’t feel like I was exhausted after class and I feel I learned some new erm * cough cough* useful moves for my non-existent life partner to enjoy. I can now crawl like a sexy tiger, go down a fire man’s pole like I’m J LO pre-record deal, and have learned how to close out a routine like a fine as freak fantasy female  and most importantly “collect my money.” You know with this booty, the money collection part would likely take forever.  I was surprised that as I finished that the others in class could resist the urge to shower me generously with paper. Holler for a dollar.

Plus size fitness blog plus size pole dancing 3I took my pole dancing class at Brass Ovaries, pretty much the best name for anything woman centered ever. Also their mascot is a unicorn: double score. And for the triple layup- they’re saying is “Glittter, Guts, Glory.” In short, I was meant to move my body like a snake in this studio. IT WAS DESTINY. SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY.

Why Yoga Challenges Are the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me

Why Yoga Challenges Are the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me

Plus Size Fitness Plus Size Yoga Yoga Challenges

2 months ago I was having some real chat with myself. I was down right disappointed that I’d let my fitness take a back seat. Erm well more like, I wasn’t even letting it get in the car. I let it out at a shady bus stop  in nowheresville and drove as far as possible away.  I didn’t know how to get restarted and the options seemed overwhelming. Get a trainer? Too expensive. Watch YouTube videos? Kind of awkward. Go to a class? That would require getting dressed and being the token out of shape overweight awkward girl in the back that everyone silently judges. I was in a rut. Just as I was debating investing my quality time into a pint of Ben and Jerry strawberry cheese cake ice cream, a picture of a yoga challenge for beginners popped up on my instagram feed.

Since it was Friday and I was having a low key night with my on and off again boyfriend, netflix, I figured why not give the first pose a try. I did my simple little downward dog, filtered the heck out of it (don’t lie we all do it) and sent that image out to the world. Plus Size Fitness Plus Size Yoga Yoga ChallengesAs comments poured in I learned 3 things:

  1. The yoga challenge community is amazingly supportive. I found strength and confidence in their positive reinforcement and love.
  2.  I was stronger than I thought I was. I had mentally beat myself up and taught myself to think about all the things I couldn’t do. Even on day one I was already learning my body wasn’t the broken down hot mess I thought it was.
  3. It was easy. I could commit to a pose a day surely. That’s like 5 Minutes. I can spare 5 minutes (unless you’re a creepy dude, then I have no time to spare for you) .

As the challenge went on I began to see interesting changes. I began stretching to prep for new poses. I tried things I never thought possible. Like who would have thought chubby (but fabulous) old me would be doing a headstand? I certainly didn’t. I probably never would have found out I could if I hadn’t had something forcing me to give it a go. In the beginning a faced each day with the mentality “this probably going to be a hilariously comical massive failure,” However, as days went by that mentality shifted. Now I look at poses with the mindset, ” I can do this… if not now then the next time this pose comes around.” I’ve seen myself accomplish the impossible: splits, back bends and more- all because I had something pushing me to try. Plus I made amazing friends (@lexi.getting.flexi and @kachelle99 to name a few of my instagram loves).

July is nearly upon us and that means the start of some new and exciting challenges. Here are a few I have my eye on. You can click the image to get more details on how to participate. I hope that you’ll find one you love and give it ago. If you do, tag me (@glitterandlazers) and I will do my best to cheer you on. I want to have your back, just as the amazing yogis of instagram supported me back in May.

Plus Size Disney Looks: Belle from Beauty and the Beast

Plus Size Disney Looks: Belle from Beauty and the Beast

Today I kick off a little plus size fashion blog series I have been aching to do for months. For the next few weeks, I’ll be using Sundays to post Disney princess inspired casual looks. I love the idea of being inspired by the things that make you happy. And Disney? Well, it makes me pretty freaking giant ice cream sundae with caramel, fudge and peanut butter sauce on top elated.

Look there I go, a girl that is strange but special, a most peculiar mad’moiselle! It’s no pity nor a sin that I don’t quite fit in, cause I really am a funny girl- a beauty but a funny girl. I really am a funny girl. I’m BELLLLLLLE. [cut music, hold for applause]

Plus size fashion blog disney inspired outfit Belle Beauty and the beast 3

Beauty and the beast was set in France and it felt the only place to really capture a truly “Belle” look. Don’t get me wrong; I am NOT flying to the Middle East for Jasmine or learning how to snorkel in a gown for Ariel. Hell no. Its just life gave me an opportunity and I went all carpe diem up in it.

I love Belle because she was like the original hipster-esque “be smart and make your own decisions “ cartoon idol. She turned down the hottest guy in town to instead end up with a bearded tortured artist type. She was a geek- a hard-core one- and wasn’t afraid to show it. If Belle were alive today, she’d definitely  go to Comic Con. I’d put money on it.

For this Belle inspired look I used a simple white t-shirt from Target to evoke the white sleeves and apron Belle wears up until her fancy sparkly sparkly golden dress moment. To add a modern touch to Belle’s classic blue pinafore I relied on this lovely Cherry Velvet Marcia dress that I sourced through Gwynnie Bee. I love how the cut outs add a modern touch to Belle’s classic country style. I chose a knotted vintage floral scarf to pay homage to the most adorable bookworm ever’s classic white statement bow. The look is finished with a pair of vintage gold and opal studs (thanks Mom!) and black flats purchased from hush puppies.

To mirror Belle’s hair I used side twists to create the volume and shape of her tresses in the original cartoon. I used a neutral palette of eye shadows starting first with MACs rice paper (my favorite base shadow ever), then highlighting the creases with a plum tinted brown and lastly shaping the corners with a rich coffee color. Belle had amazing eyebrows, so I made sure to darken and accent my own eyebrows. Lastly I chose a lovely plum matte lipstick from Wet n’ Wild to add nice touch of both strength and femininity.
